Camellias.......so often overlooked, this fantastic ornamental shrub can hold it's place in most any garden today.

Camellias, native to China, Southeast Asia, & Japan, have made their way to the United States and have been here for over 200 years.  They are evergreen shrubs and trees that display a vast array of colors, bloom types, bloom seasons, and fragrance.  They were once thought of as a "southern plant" because they adapted so nicely to outdoor climates in the southern regions of the US.  With the development of cold hardy varieties, the camellia belt has been extended far beyond the traditional southern climates.

The Camellia provides some of the most desirable growth characteristics not found with other ornamentals.  There are cultivars that maintain heights of 2 feet or as tall as 75 feet.  Their life span can virtually cross centuries.  Some of the United States oldest camellias are found in Charleston South Carolina at Middleton Gardens.  A few of these camellias are over 200 years old.

Camellias are one of the few plants that typically bloom in the Fall and Winter depending on the species and the variety.  No other plant species has the long bloom season and can provide a magnificent display of color that the Camellia does during a time when nothing else is in bloom.  They take center stage when the Roses, Daylillies, and Magnolias are sleeping!

Camellias are also known for the tea we drink today.  Camellia Sinensis, the tea plant, is the worlds most popular and the oldest camellia in existence.  This fall blooming shrub takes on Viburnum, Anise and other garden ornamentals and hold's it's own.

We are glad that you have found CamelliaShop.com and now you can begin your camellia journey.  We hope that you find that perfect camellia for you or for someone special.  We are here for you,  please contact us if you have any questions!
